![]() The characters have as deep and detailed a history as any protagonist to be found. So I go through the entire process I go through with main characters, as described in the previous installment on Main Characters ( found here). I’ll use almost none of this information, most of the time, but I need to have it, because the characters still need to have a personality, a distinct voice, and I think that personality is made up of as much as a main character’s. When I write side-characters, I give them an entire bio, as though they’re main characters. They need to be solid characters, not just random toss-ins. But you get the idea-the side characters are important. The analogy stops working if you squint too close after that, so I’ll end it there. They’re not what runs the car themselves-but they damn sure are essential to make it work like it’s supposed to. ![]() I like to think of side characters as the shocks in a car-unless they’re sturdy, you’re going to have a bumpy ride. ![]()
